The Wheel of the Year
|
Long ago, time was marked according
to the seasons and how those seasons effected hunting, planting and gathering. Today,
many Wiccans and Pagans still celebrate the turning of the wheel of the year as a means
to honor the source of life, the God and Goddess or to give thanks to Mother Earth.
How the Holidays are celebrated is a private matter but can be joyously devoted to
singing, dancing, feasting, joining together with friends and relatives or simply
lighting a candle and saying a personal prayer.
There are eight Holidays, four major ones and four "minor".
The Holidays are usually referred to as Sabbats and the major Sabbats are:
The minor Sabbats are based on the Summer and Winter solstice and the Spring and
Autumn equinox, so in reality the date can change slightly from year to year but the
following are the dates on which they are generally observed:
- Yule - Winter Solstice, December 21st
- Ostara - Spring Equinox, March 21st
- Litha - Summer Solstice, June 21st
- Mabon - Autumn Equinox, September 21st
In addition to the above Holidays, there is a celebration during the full moon of each month. The full moon
celebrations are sometimes referred to as Esbats. It is during this time that the "real" work is done since
the Holidays are reserved for celebration and feasting.
