Celtic Jewelry: Necklaces, Earrings, Crosses. |
Celtic Jewelry is prized for it's intricate knotwork and symbols. Celtic symbols have been used for many centuries to decorate
jewelry, necklaces, pendants and rings.
The meanings of the knotwork have been lost over time but in general it is believed that
the spiral represents the sun; the triple spiral is rebirth, reincarnation, or in wicca - the goddess. The triquetra represents the three
phases of woman; maiden, mother and crone (or wise woman). A four-sided shield design, as in the Celtic Cross at right is used for protection, and intertwining knots are called lovers knots.
The knotwork is, in fact, quite famous worldwide for having graced the pages of the incredibly beautiful, Irish Book of Kells.
The Book of Kells was produced by Irish Celtic monks around AD 800. It is a lavishly illustrated manuscript that has survived since the Middle Ages. It contains the four gospels of the Bible in Latin and each page is decorated with Celtic knotwork, symbols and other illuminations. Today it is on permanent display at the Trinity College Library in Dublin, Ireland.
